We humans have been writing about leadership for more than 2000 years. Is there still anything new and exciting to be said about the subject? Maybe not, but we still hunger for information and inspiration. ReaderStrength is an e-publication that adds value to your busy life as a leader by pointing you toward books that will fuel your inspiration as you lead yourself and others.

Laws and rules are a very popular format in which to introduce leadership/management ideas. Many books currently on the market incorporate numbers or steps into their titles: 12, 10, and 7. This little book has only four components. “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom” by Don Miguel Ruiz is not a book about leadership. Instead it introduces a way of life; a way of thinking that can influence your leadership style.

The “agreements” are pacts you make with yourself. They are simple:

Be impeccable with your word.

Do not take anything personally.

Do not make assumptions.

Always do your best.

Be impeccable with your word – Be honest, tempered with kindness. Do not gossip or condone gossip. Honor your commitments. Be silent, being impeccable may mean saying nothing at all.

Do not take anything personally – Everyone lives and works within his or her own “world”. Other’s statements and beliefs have nothing to do with you. If others are being deliberately malicious, do not accept it personally. Only you and always you know how you live, and what you think and believe.

Do not make assumptions – Ask questions, be clear in your communications, and check for understanding in order to know that you understand.

Always do your best – Even if the end result is not what you had expected, if you have done your best you have not failed in any way. Do your best with any task no matter how small or large. Make it your best, not the best. Your best is measurable. The best is subjective.

The book may require several readings. For some readers, it may seem offbeat and too spiritual. At its very core, it is an expansion on the Golden Rule.  Whether or not you choose to read this book, take some time to consider how these simple agreements can help you as a leader who wants to improve your team/employees/co-workers.

Marcia A. Hoffman currently works for Catholic Charities in New Jersey. She is a late bloomer, believes in the power of forgiveness and is successfully raising a teen-ager.
