Adult Learning Theory

The field of adult learning was pioneered by Malcolm Knowles.  His research led him to identify the following characteristics of adult learners:

  • Adults are self-directed:  they learn what they want to, when they want to

  • Adult have life experiences and knowledge that will impact what they learn

  • Adults are goal-oriented.  They will take a class or read a book in order to achieve a goal.

  • Adults want to apply what they learn.  They must see a purpose to learning something

in terms of how they can apply it.

LeaderStrengthTM Systems, Inc. designs our learning programs and processes to support the characteristics of adult learners. Most importantly we link learning to business outcomes so the adult can see the relevancy of the learning activities for their job and their career.  We encourage self-directed learning at every level.
